Midwifery

Our vision

Midwives work in partnership with women to ensure a positive pregnancy and birth experience that supports healthy families in our community.

Our services

Continuity - over 90% of women who give birth at Waitematā have a self-employed Lead Maternity Carer (midwife, GP or obstetrician).

Labour and birth care - We have over 7000 births between our two hospitals. Hospital midwives provide labour and birth care for women who have a community midwife, LMC or Obstetrician LMC. For all women, regardless of LMC, we provide a second midwife for birth support.

Postnatal care - we have an average ratio of one midwife to five women on the postnatal wards. Both hospitals are 'baby friendly accredited' with an 80% average exclusive breastfeeding rate on discharge.

Complex care - we also provide midwifery care to women with complicated pregnancies requiring a multidisciplinary approach.
